Car Lift Safety Guide

Safe lift use depends on correct installation, daily inspection, proper vehicle positioning, mechanical-lock use and strict adherence to the exact model manual.

Before installation

• Confirm the lift matches the vehicle’s weight, dimensions, axle loading and lifting points.
• Verify concrete, anchors, utilities, ceiling clearance and local requirements.
• Plan safe freight unloading and component handling.
• Use qualified installers and electricians where required.

Before every lift

1. Inspect cables, chains, hoses, cylinders, locks, anchors, arms, pads, runways and controls for damage, looseness or leaks.
2. Keep the bay clear of people, tools, cords and obstructions.
3. Confirm the vehicle’s actual load, including cargo, tools and attachments.
4. Position the vehicle according to the lift and vehicle manufacturer instructions.
5. Engage the parking brake or follow the model-specific restraint procedure.

Raising and lowering

Raise the vehicle only enough to confirm stability and correct contact. Stop immediately if the vehicle shifts, the lift operates unevenly or any unusual sound or leakage appears. Raise to an approved lock position and lower onto the mechanical locks. Never rely on hydraulic pressure alone for storage or work.

2-post safety

Use manufacturer-approved vehicle lift points, equalize arm restraint engagement and account for center of gravity. Recheck pad contact after the initial test lift. Never improvise adapters or contact points.

4-post safety

Center tires on the runways and use wheel stops or chocks as directed. Confirm tire and axle loading. Use only approved bridge jacks and accessories. A portable lift may only be moved unloaded and as instructed.

Maintenance and damaged equipment

Follow the manual’s inspection, lubrication, adjustment and replacement schedule. Remove a lift from service when a safety device, structural part, cable, hose, anchor or control is damaged or questionable. Do not bypass locks or make unauthorized modifications.
