How to Choose a 4-Post Car Lift

Choose a four-post lift by matching actual vehicle weight and tire placement to the runway, then checking the complete lift footprint, storage height, accessories and installation plan.

1. Define the job

Decide whether the lift is mainly for parking, inspection, alignment, truck service or wheels-off work. Storage models, alignment lifts and heavy-duty commercial lifts solve different problems even when their capacities overlap.

2. Measure the vehicle

Actual operating weight and separate axle weights.
Wheelbase and overall length.
Tire track, tire width and outside dual width where applicable.
Ground clearance, roof height and overhang.

3. Compare usable runway geometry

Check runway length and width, adjustable spacing, distance between posts, drive-through width, ramp length and tire-stop position. All tires must rest correctly on the usable deck. The headline overall length may include ramps, so use the drawing’s labeled measurements.

4. Calculate the bay

Measure width, length and clear height at the tightest points. Include garage-door travel, opener rails, lights, beams, sprinklers, cabinets and approach room. For stacked storage, calculate both vehicles and the lift structure at a usable mechanical lock.

5. Choose service accessories

Wheels-off work requires model-approved bridge jacks. Check each jack’s capacity against axle weight, not only total vehicle weight. Alignment work requires the correct turntables, slip plates and runway configuration. Confirm trays, ramps, caster kits and center panels are approved for the exact model.

6. Verify installation
