Can I Put a Car Lift in My Home Garage?

A car lift can be installed in many home garages when the vehicle, clear space, concrete, power, delivery route and local requirements all match the exact lift.

Seven checks before choosing a lift

  1. Vehicle: record actual weight, wheelbase, dimensions, ground clearance and lifting points.
  2. Ceiling: measure to the lowest door track, opener, beam, light, duct or sprinkler.
  3. Floor: verify thickness, strength, reinforcement, condition, joints and embedded utilities.
  4. Bay: allow room for posts, ramps, power unit, doors, cabinets and safe walking clearance.
  5. Utilities: confirm voltage, amperage, wiring and compressed air where required.
  6. Delivery: plan freight unloading and movement of heavy components into the garage.
  7. Permission: check permits, zoning, HOA, landlord, insurance and local inspection requirements.

Low, standard and tall garages

Lower ceilings may favor a baseplate two-post or mid-rise scissor lift. Vehicle storage generally requires a four-post lift plus enough height for both vehicles, the runway structure and a working margin. Taller garages can accommodate high-rise storage or clear-floor two-post designs when the slab and vehicle also fit.

Storage height calculation

Add the measured lower-vehicle height, occupied runway height at a usable mechanical lock, upper-vehicle height and a practical safety margin. Calculate against the lowest obstruction—not the nominal ceiling. See the garage-height guide.

Which style is most practical?

A four-post lift is naturally suited to storage and drive-on access. A two-post lift is useful for wheels-free repair but depends on correct arm placement and anchoring. A mid-rise scissor lift can work where full-rise height is unavailable.
