How Much Garage Height Do You Need for a 4-Post Lift?
Required garage height equals the lower vehicle height plus the lift’s occupied height at the chosen lock plus the upper vehicle height, with extra clearance for the ceiling and every obstruction.
The practical formula
Minimum clear height = lower vehicle height + runway/structure allowance at the storage lock + upper vehicle height + safety margin.
Use the exact model drawing because “maximum rise,” “runway top height” and “clearance under tracks” are different measurements. Measure the actual vehicles, including roof racks, antennas, suspension changes and tire size.

Measure the lowest obstruction
Clear ceiling height is not the drywall height if a garage-door track, opener rail, light, beam, sprinkler or duct hangs lower. Measure above all four lift posts and above the roof of the upper vehicle. A high-lift garage-door conversion or wall-mount opener may recover space, but must be designed and installed correctly.
Do not park at hydraulic pressure alone
Store a raised vehicle on the lift’s mechanical locks at the approved position. Calculate the stack at a usable lock, not an imaginary height between locks. Leave margin for suspension movement, loading error and safe operation.
Other space checks
Confirm overall width, overall length including ramps, approach room, door opening, pedestrian clearance and power-unit placement. For a portable lift, confirm the unloaded movement path and never move the lift while loaded.
